Alyssa is first in our ongoing series of featured CrossFit Everett athletes. This will be a monthly addition to the blog, where we will highlight a member who exemplifies the principles / culture / work ethic of our gym.
Alyssa (aka Ally) is a great example of someone who has put in lots of time and hard work at the gym and is chipping away steadily at her fitness goals. She is 16 years old and has been CrossFitting for about a year and a half. She became interested in CrossFit by watching her older brother and seeing all of his fitness and strength progress; he encouraged her to try it and thought she would like it (there are now 3 members of the Lopez family working out at CFE). Alyssa has recently joined the lifting club at CFE and has been working on her Olympic Lifts. She will be competing in the June 4th USA Weightlifting Meet, “Might Makes Right” where she will compete against the Northwest’s best lifters. Be sure to come to Local’s Gym on June 4th and root for Alyssa and all other CFE athletes who will be competing!
Q & A with Alyssa:
What fitness improvements have you experienced as a result of doing Crossfit?
I have gained lots of strength and I have lost approximately 40 lbs by coming on a regular basis (5 days per week) and following a Paleo nutrition program with lots of proteins and good fats and little carbs.
What has been the hardest part of the nutrition program?
The temptation of pasta is the hardest!
What is your athletic background?
I used to just go to the YMCA; play some volleyball, etc. I also play / practice volleyball with the EVCC team.
What got you interested in Oly Lifting; what do you like most about it?
Jesse encouraged me to sign up for the June 4 competition. I just love the competitiveness to get the most weight up into the air. The rush and the feeling of it are great. I’ve never participated in a weightlifting meet so I don’t really know what to expect, but I’m going there to try my best with everything I’ve been learning.
What keeps you coming back to CrossFit?
The people here are great! Everyone is very nice. The competitiveness is something that keeps me coming back. I’m always sore, but I love it so I keep coming back.
What do you like the least about Crossfit?
All of the bruises.
What is your most favorite lift?
The Clean & Jerk. PR: 120 lbs
What is your least favorite lift?
Snatch. PR: 90 lbs
Love everything with box jumps, wallballs, and running.
Least favorite WOD?
Fran, and anything with burpees…they are the worst.
What are some remaining fitness goals that you have for yourself?
Pullups without bands. I can do one but am working on 5 in a row.
What advice do you have for others that are looking into CrossFit?
You just have to try it. You have to go in open minded; you can’t look at it from the outside and assume you can’t do it. As long as you did your best then who cares what your time is.
What do you think about the trainers at CFE? (ok, that is a shameless plug)…
Love them to death; they are great!
